Consulate General of the Republic of Serbia in Chicago issues certificates enabling the import into the country of household items free of customs duties.
The nationals of the Republic of Serbia who have spent at least two years without interruption working abroad are entitled to a customs certificate.
Persons who have worked continuously abroad for up to ten years are exempted from customs duties on household items up to a total value of 20,000 EUR.
Persons who have worked continuously abroad for more than ten years are exempted from customs duties on household items without any restriction on their total value.
Merely living abroad does not in itself make you eligible for a duty-free import.
The certificate only applies to the import of household items into the Republic of Serbia and may be used within one year from the date of return from working abroad. In accordance with the Regulation on customs privileges, the customs authority determines the date of return from abroad on the basis of a travel document or in another way.
Required documents:
• valid Serbian passport.
• completed request form (the signature of the applicant must be notarized by the Notary Public if the request is submitted by mail).
• proof of legal residence in the U.S. (Green Card, U.S. Passport, Work Visa).
• proof of number of years of employment ( tax returns for each year of employment, or statement from the Social Security Administration about petitioner’s retirement benefits, or the SSA report about the years of employment, an original letter from the employer indicating the length of employment).
Consular fee is $130 USD, payable by credit card, cash and MoneyOrder made out to the Consulate General of Serbia in Chicago (personal checks are not accepted).
